“Released before the 2013, this is an enthralling evocative and elegant Mount Edelstone. It's infused with deep yet refined succulent blueberry fruits, savoury spice, white pepper and layered complexity of exotic spice, culminating in a refined and approachable finish of finely structured tannins. It lingers very long and accurate. A characterful and accurate expression of the 102-year-old vines of this celebrated vineyard and one of the greats”

"Henschke has decided to release the 2014 Mount Edelstone Shiraz ahead of the 2013. “The 2013 needs patience,” Stephen Henschke says. “It is a structural beauty, though slower developing. After only three years (the 2014) is perfectly poised for release, already showing the hallmark characters of this vineyard.” The 2014 is the 62nd release from the Mount Edelstone vineyard, which is now 105 years old. According to the presser, 2014 “is a tiny release from a season that delivered very low yields, well below the average for this site.”

It’s quite a beauty. Satiny. Curranty. A flood of smooth, berried fruit with fragrant herbs, peppers and blossoms floating throughout. It’s warm and rich but there’s more than a little enchantment to it. It’s pretty, as is the Edelstone way, but substantial. Tannin is fine and just-assertive-enough. There’s a smoky, peppery, almost meaty character here but it comes enmeshed with the fruit. You have to enjoy the warmer style of shiraz, certainly, but it’s a long way from being overdone and it really is quite seriously beautiful. It can also be consumed any time from now, give or take.

"The 100-year-old Mount Edelstone vineyard might not quite have the cachet of the Henschke's more famous (and older) Hill of Grace, but it can produce Eden Valley shiraz every bit as exquisite. This, the latest vintage is sublime: rich, saturated blood plum fruit sprinkled with exotic, fragrant woody spices and swaddled in firm but supple tannin."
