- Grosset Springvale Riesling Watervale
If the Polish Hill is power and intensity, the sub-regional Watervale Riesling resonates pure fruit with mouthwatering slatey acidity. The fruit derives from a hill top site with a high exposure to sunlight. The thin topsoils are red loams interspersed with shale over limestone and the vines are deeply rooted into slate/shale bedrock. The wine is vinified in the same manner as the Polish Hill Riesling. No pressings are used in the wine. Grosset says, "making Riesling is the purest form of winemaking our options are very restricted. No oak, no malo-lactic and usually no extended lees contact or grape-skin contact is employed. A disciplined winemaking approach is needed to retain the inherent fruit characters and expression of individual vineyard site." Andrew Caillard MW
5 Star Winery - Halliday Wine Companion
"The undisputed monarch of Clare Valley is Jeffrey Grosset, whose 32-year reign has seen a raft of superlative wines set standards to which other winemakers can only aspire." - Tyson Stelzer, Qantas Inflight Wine Guide 2012, Dec 2012
"Grosset's pre-eminence in riesling making is recognised... however, he merits equal recognition for the other wines in his portfolio... These are all benchmarks." - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion, 2014 Edition
"Grosset Wines is an independently owned winery producing nine highly regarded premium wines each vintage. Established in 1981, the winery is situated in the historic township of Auburn in South Australia’s Clare Valley... We aim to produce the best examples of variety and place; Clare Valley rieslings which express dramatic differences between soft and hard rock sites, and uniquely sited cabernet from the coolest place in the region. We make the most of this unpolluted environment by working organically and are not afraid to use different wine making approaches to show each vineyard at its best. Each is a testament to this philosophy." - Grosset
