"The style of wine synonymous with Greenock Creek is dense, plush, brooding, concentrated and powerful. This 2016 Shiraz Roennfeldt Road road adds "multidimensional" and "sybaritic" to that list. This is an insane wine—it is stylistically old school by Australian standards, but unquestionably powerful, high quality and imposing. The fruit sits on the black end of the spectrum: tea, graphite, meat, earth, resin, char, berries, midnight, rocks, molasses and prunes. The tannins are infused into every part of the wine and feel as if they have been honed by a blacksmith—the clang of metal and metal dust hangs heavy in the air. The fruit is sourced from vines that at the time of picking were over 120 years old, and the statement that that makes in the mouth is salient and impactful. The profusion of American oak is woven into every fiber of this wine but, strangely, does not stand out as being overdone. The only thing to add is that the fruit is balanced with the acid; and 2016 was a cracking year, so this has decades in front of it.
