'The story of this wine is the story of a vineyard. Planted in the 1940s, the Ashmead block is older than the Cabernet plantings of the Napa Valley and Bordeaux. Unfortunately, its vines have fallen victim to a disease called 'Dead Arm,' causing one or more arms of the vine to die and not produce fruit. Eventually the whole vine will die and indeed the Ashmead block is producing less and less fruit each vintage. The silver lining to this cloud is that the fruit that is produced is remarkably intense and rich - indeed it has been the best Cabernet of all the plantings.

It is this brilliance that saved the vineyard from being totally destroyed in 1997 when Elderton just could not bear to see this quality site banished to the annals of history. Instead they promoted the vineyard to a higher destiny, making a single vineyard wine called The Ashmead. A wine made by Elderton without time and cost pressures, it is a gift to Cabernet drinkers the world over.'
