The NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Les Crayères Vieilles Vignes is one of the more refined, polished wines I have ever tasted from Francis Egly. Everything is simply in the right place. Mirabelle plum, hard candy, flowers, mint and chalk are all beautifully delineated in a super-classy, polished Champagne that showcases the Egly-Ouriet style at its very best. Lifted, gracious and precise, the Vieilles Vignes is simply magnificent. The 25% new oak is totally integrated, even at this early stage. This release is 60% 2009 and 40% 2008, a blend of vintages that could not possibly be more complementary.

Egly-Ouriet's famous NV Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Brut Les Crayères is 100% old vine Pinot Noir from the eponymous Lieu-dit in Ambonnay, whose vines were planted in 1947. The youngest release blends 40% of vintage 2008 with 60% of 2009. The wine starts very intense on the nose and intertwines pineapple aromas with new oak flavors. Pure, lean, straight and elegant, this is a full-bodied, complex and very persistent Blanc de Noir with great tension and ageing potential. The low dosage is only two grams per liter.

Needless to say that Egly-Ouriet's Blanc de Noirs remain outstanding in their freshness, finesse and complexity. The growing domaine farms 12 hectares, largely in Ambonnay, but also in Verzenay, Vrigny and Bouzy. All the wines are fermented with natural yeasts in barrels. The malolactic fermentation is blocked to maintain the freshness, which is one of the characteristic features in the terroir-driven Egly-Ouriet portfolio. All of the wines are bottled unfiltered ("since 20 years") and disgorged after four to six years as Brut or as Extra Brut."
