"This wine is harvested from our oldest parcels of Erdener Treppchen, where steady winds keep the clusters dry and prevent the onset of harmful molds. This allows for an exceptionally long hang time, giving the grapes extraordinary aromatic development. The wine is fermented spontaneously in a 1,000-liter barrel and sits on the full lees for twelve months.
This vineyard borders directly on the eastern side of the prelate and is so steep that centuries ago stone steps were built into the hillside to give workers better access to the vines. If the wines from the Wehlen sundial look like a graceful "ballerina", the muscular free-style climbers coming from the podium are similar. The ferrous red slate soil produces wines that are rich, racy and complex in taste, with an intense mineral aftertaste." - Dr Loosen
