Wine List/Dom Perignon

[SOLD-OUT] Dom Perignon 1998

On the nose, the initial notes of fresh almonds and grapefruit gradually lead into cashew nuts and spices complemented by lightly toasted brioche. On the palate, the sensation is one of diving into a wave: a satiny texture curls and unfurls on the palate, embracing and caressing it. An instant of weightlessness, matter vanishes, the finish vibrates, and the taste buds are aroused by controlled ardour. The persistence is remarkable, with just the slightest undertone of tartness (citrus zest and buds). - Dom Perignon "...this seems to me to be the best Dom P since at least 1990 and probably long before... Quite unlike the relatively tight, austere 1996 (which should probably be kept and drunk after the 1998), this cuvee is extraordinarily open and ripe already " it hits the palate with such force it is easy to confuse its ripeness with sweetness but then, in Dom P style, it tightens up immensely and finished with great race and refreshing dryness. The nose initially suggests something headily fragrant " lilies perhaps " but then develops in the glassy to be much meatier and denser. But it took a glass 24 hours to develop the tight-knit, bready autolysis that is characteristic of most Dom Perignon vintages, which suggests to me that this wine, while being super-welcoming, will also have a very long life ahead of it." - Jancis Robinson OBE, Master of Wine "A stronger vintage than expected, the 1998 Dom Perignon exhibits aromas and flavors of lemon oil, orange rind, and brioche in a medium-bodied, zesty, rich, moderately intense style. It is far superior to either the 1993 or 1992. Readers should remember that the 1971 Dom Perignon Rose is still drinking exquisitely. I recently had the 1969 and 1970 Dom Perignons (from magnum), and both were drinking brilliantly. It makes one realize just how long-lived these wines can be. Production is confidential, but there must be hundreds of thousands of cases of Dom Perignon since it available in most of the world's luxury hotels and restaurants." Robert Parker
