Campbell Mattinson 94 points!D'Arenberg's The Dead Arm Shiraz is matured in new and used French oak, and some used American oak as well. It's always been a 'big end of town' red and in this style it's almost always good.
This is a juicy, briney, meaty release. There's almost a rusty element here " if it were a cowboy, its name would be Rusty Tannins. Saturated plum, earth, and chocolate-like notes. Smoky chicory too. It has intensity and length but it's succulent; it will age in the bottle for a long time but it's eminently enjoyable now. Does the acidity level sit a fraction high in the wine? A little, but not so much. Grainy exit. Both impressive, and delicious.

Ralph Kyte-Powell 94 points! This shiraz seems less woody than past vintages. Syrupy, spicy berry aromas, complex earthiness and balanced oak lead into a seamless, sustained, middleweight palate. Fine-grained ripe tannins give grip and balance. Impressive.

Gourmet Traveller 95 points! This '09 smells of smoke, toasty oak, tar and bitumen while in the mouth it's hugely powerful, dense and concentrated, loaded with tannin and extract. An outstanding shiraz of old vine depths, it will live for decades.
