Wine fact: Dead Arm is a vine disease caused by a fungus which randomly affects vineyards all around the world. Often vines with the symptoms are repruned or abandoned. D'Arenberg consider Dead Arm a natural part of vineyard life. One of the 'arms' of the vines is reduced to dead wood, which then means the other arm of the vine produces small volumes of the most amazingly concentrated and highly flavoured grapes.

'(2004 vintage is)The finest Dead Arm ever made has a smoky, ethereal and spicy bouquet of slightly meaty dark plums and berries scented with violets, licorice and black pepper, cloves and cinnamon. Smooth and sumptuous, its powerful and searingly intense palate of black berry fruit has a salty/mineral edge and a sophisticated marriage with new oak. Despite its intense fruit sweetness, the wine finishes long and savoury, with lingering sour edges, terrific acids and overall balance. A traditional wine, with cut and polish. Drink 2016-2024+.'

'The 2004 Dead Arm Shiraz (94 points, 2009-2018). I'm a reader and a drinker and a buyer, so I'm well aware that these kinds of articles almost always seem to say that the latest release is the best, but the fact is that on the night, that's exactly how it seemed (though for drinking now, I'd definitely hit on the 2000). The 2004 is rich and pure and traced by exquisite runs of fine, ripe tannin, its sweet, dark fruitiness meshed into firm place by a perfect storm of acid and tannin combined. It's another example of what looks like a mighty McLaren Vale shiraz vintage. It certainly set me back on my feet - once I'd poured a taste of this wine, I then went back for a big pour of it, and then I settled in for a while...'

'The renowned 2004 Shiraz The Dead Arm, fashioned from ancient head-pruned vines, is stunning. An inky/purple color is accompanied by a glorious perfume of creosote/melted road tar, blackberry and cassis liqueur, pepper, and spice. This deep, rich, full-bodied, tannic Shiraz should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and will last for two decades or more. It is the finest Dead Arm since the 2001.'
Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #167 (Oct 2006).
