[SOLD-OUT] Cullen Red Moon Blend 2017

"This is a new Mangan vineyard wine, celebrating a red moon eclipse (11FEB17) that occurred around harvest. It is mostly malbec with a large portion of petit verdot and a splash of merlot. A wonderful event to celebrate in a single wine, and great to see Vanya et al at Cullen always pushing ideas and their biodynamic life into new wines.

A light, crisp, energetic red wine of crunchy red berry fruit featuring strawberry, cherry and pomegranate-like flavours. The bouquet is floral too, with big whiffs of pot pourri and faint green herbs lending character. It’s such a vibrant, electric mouthful of wine, skies away from the more elegant, shapely reds that make up the flagships of Cullen. Train tracks of sleek tannin lend some shape. In some respects, it’s a wild-edged wine, free form and eclectic, but can’t escape its pedigree, per se. A nerd in hipster clothing. I like it."

"A Red Moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse when the light filtering through the Earth’s atmosphere dapples the moon in red light. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurred on the 11th of February 2017 during harvest.

Fruit from the Mangan Vineyard was hand harvested, fermented naturally and basket pressed to French oak. Cullen Wines have been very successful in meeting their aim of producing a wine which, while fruit driven, is of such high quality that it will develop for several years under good cellaring conditions. This wine was made from a carefully selected blend of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot grown on the Mangan Vineyard, which has been shown to be ideally suited to nurturing these grape varieties.

100% Mangan Vineyard. 57% Malbec, 37% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot. 9 months in French oak with 10% of the barrels being new. Medium red with ruby tinges. Plum, Cherries with lifted floral notes. Medium bodied with dark cherries, blueberries and savoury notes on the finish."
