The Age Epicure BEST CABERNET 2013!

"As always, this flagship red wine is produced only from the very best barrels produced from the Bordeaux red grape varieties grown on the Cullen vineyards. This wine, together with the 2011 Kevin John Chardonnay, unequivocally demonstrates that the 2011 vintage at Cullen Wines was excellent for both white and red grape varieties. This Diana Madeline has outstanding and pristine fruit clarity.

Vibrant deep mulberry red, with a strong crimson meniscus. The bouquet has amazing clarity and complexity, with a very attractive combination of cassis, chocolate, aniseed and ironstone aromas. Its palate is plush silky and long, representing a marvellous compote of fresh red fruits, made up of cassis, plum and cherry flavours and which are complemented by very fine and elegant tannins. The wine has a wonderfully long and persistent finish."

This release is an Australian classic in the making.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River, the Cullen landscape: all are written in a clear, deliberate, careful script here. Interestingly for a cabernet sauvignon it's as much or more of a water-colour style than it is an oil painting. Bay leaves, pencils, mulberries, boysenberry and subdued blackcurrant. There's enough there, it's right before your eyes, but it's not shouting at you, just stop and listen and it's all there to take in. Herbal notes, fraying, crunch them between your fingers and they disintegrate. Tannin comes with the taut, heavy, foreboding strum of a double bass, incalzando. It's a wine of presence, and yet it's neither large nor loud; it makes complete sense, even when it doesn't.

Low-strength Australian cabernet-based reds can have ripeness issues, but this elegant, tangy Margaret River cabernet blend shows what's possible at 12.5 per cent. From inspired winemaker Vanya Cullen, it has scents of blackcurrants, violets and leaves, bitter chocolate, cedar, and minerals. The intense palate combines ripe and savoury flavours with a silky feel, a lingering finish and balanced tannins.
The Age Epicure, 13th August 2013.
Aniseed and bay perfume, redcurrant, blackcurrant, beautiful cedar/mocha oak treatment. Medium bodied, acidity sits a little high and gives it a mildly astringent twiggy edge, though the tannin is toothsome and very fine. Length is excellent. High quality. Undoubtedly. A wine for ten or twenty years in the future, where it will likely show grace and composure and, perhaps, a clean set of heels to many of its peers.
Gary Walsh, Wine Front, 7th August 2013.
Is there a cabernet sauvignon in Australia that can rival Cullen's Diana Madeline? I doubt it and certainly not when winemaker Vanya Cullen has a wonderful vintage at her disposal, as she did in 2011, which resulted in another dazzling, seamless wine.
Jeni Port, The Age Epicure, 17th December 2013.
