"A captivating fragrant flagship Cabernet Merlot from Cullen shows gentle regional herbs and pure cassis then red fruits and foresty bramble with cedary oak in the wings. There's plenty of evolution ahead. The palate is a textural treat with supple, flowing tannins, elegant and balanced. Builds in layers through and holds a precise length."

"Red fruits, spice, briar and violet aromas: this is a wine with lots of detail. It's clean, concentrated and elegant, with a long finish and ample, persistent tannins that run the length of the palate."
Gourmet Traveller Wine Oct/Nov 2010, 100 Top New Releases
"A medium bodied wine of classic styling with bright red fruits, top quality cedar oak and a pretty perfume. It's clean and fresh with fine grained ripe tannin - deceptively light, but not without length or impact. I like the 'luncheon claret' style of it, but wouldn't mind seeing just a little more oomph and Margaret River character. Almost certain to improve mind you. Value locally, not least on a world stage, is questionable this vintage, though its lightness does make for a compelling point of difference."
Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, Jun 2010
"Deftly balanced and finely structured, with a sweet, very aromatic and floral perfume of cassis, red cherries, vanilla/cedar oak and raspberries. It's very fine-grained and supple, with pristine small berry/cherry flavours entwined with a gentle, but drying backbone and knit with tight-grained oak. Silky smooth, it's long and seamless, with a lingering core of juicy red berries and dark cherries punctuated by delightful acidity."
Jeremy Oliver, The Wine Annual 2011

"The 2008 vintage of the Cullen flagship red wine, which was made from 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, is a particularly elegant example of this renowned wine style. Part of the reason for this elegance stems from the benefits of using biodynamic viticulture as this has led to a marked improvement in the structure and oxygenation of the soil. This in turn has enhanced tannin ripening. As a result, the fruit can be harvested earlier at lower sugar levels and higher natural acidity. The alcohol concentration of the finished wine is lower in line with levels sought by Cullen Wines. All of this creates a wine which is elegant and balanced."

"One of the pioneers of Margaret River, and has always produced long-lived wines of highly individual style from the mature estate vineyards. The vineyard has progressed beyond organic to biodynamic certification and, subsequently, has become the first vineyard and winery in Australia to be certified carbon neutral... Winemaking is in the hands of Vanya Cullen, daughter of the founders; she is possessed of an extraordinarily good palate and generosity to the cause of fine wine. It is impossible to single out any particular wine from the top echelon." - James Halliday

"The philosophy of Cullen Wines is to search for the best quality expression of the vineyard in the wine. The maritime climate, rocky soils, dry farming and biodynamic practices all help to create individual and diverse wine styles which are unique to Cullen.

The maritime climate of Margaret River allows a near perfect environment in which to grow the finest quality grapes. The rocky soils produce low yielding intensely flavoured grapes and the flavour of these grapes is what creates the fabric for the wine style at Cullen. The vines are dry farmed, helping to ensure maximum fruit quality, and all pruning and harvesting are done by hand with great care. Quality is paramount and when the hand-harvested grapes arrive at the winery from the vineyard, they are sorted again to ensure that only the best goes into the bottle. Biodynamic practices and minimal intervention apply to both vineyard and winery with all wines being naturally fermented." - Cullen
