Aromas of sweet blackberries are complemented by subtle hints of bark, cocoa and freshly cracked black pepper. On the palate an elegant core of black fruits is layered with dusty, dry tannin and refreshing acidity.
Craggy Range
"A brooding display of meat stock, spices and dried herbs. Lots of fine, persistent tannins. Finishes clean, long and with abundant tannin. Has gravitas."
Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Feb/March 2014.
Ralph Kyte-Powell 95 points! The most elegant release of this esteemed Hawke's Bay (NZ) syrah. Opens with fragrant aromas of crushed berries, florals, dark chocolate and pepper. The middleweight palate is superbly balanced.
The Age Epicure, 12th November 2013.
Wine Front 94 points! From Gimblett Gravels syrah grapes intentionally harvested later in the growing season and given some time in very fancy oak. Looking for depth of syrah expression, no lighter-shade-of here.
Inky in the glass with rich, mahogany oak aromas and blackcurrant and anise in tow. It's a very rich wine but light on its feet, holding intensity in a medium bodied frame. Slick, unctuous and long in flavour, it feels very sophisticated and built to be impressive from the get-go. Smooth, supple tannins lend boundaries and the finish is peppery, fresh and sandy, with a lick of seasoned wood. Glorious expression of shiraz/syrah here.
