96 Points - Gary Walsh, Wine Front!
A realisation of a dream seeded by Rob’s Grandfather, Jack Mann, a departure from the orthodox, to achieve a unique expression of Margaret River Cabernet. Variety, place and experience are woven together to redefine what’s possible.
The first release from our dry grown, organically farmed Calgardup vineyard. Located just 2km inland from the famous Redgate Beach in Margaret River, we have revitalised this vineyard with acute attention to detail. The fruit was individually berry sorted prior to natural, whole berry fermentation in a single French oak vat. Maturation followed in a seasoned demi-muid and barriques for 10 months.
We have made a wine that tastes as fresh and vibrant as the pristine coastal location of its origin. It tastes of the grape, the dirt and the sea without pretention and exudes all the characters of Margaret River Cabernet that the world admires.

"When you’re getting on a bit, the small grey text on charcoal at the side of the label is very hard to read. My glasses! Without them, I’m helpless! Except I don’t wear glasses. Anyway, this is the Cabernet debut from Rob & Genevieve Mann from the Calgardup vineyard in Redgate. Planted in 2002. Organic viticulture.
Tannin. The final frontier for Australian wine, and here we boldly go. Split infinitives and superlatives to surely follow. Blackcurrant, dried herbs, nori, flowers. Medium-bodied, ample fruit, but dry and controlled, rolls of deep earthy and gravelly tannin, savoury flavours in the main, and a long finish, freshened with raspberry pip acidity. Beautiful expression of Cabernet here.
