Wine Front 92 points!
Wine Front 92 points! The staple of Sicily was brought to Australia by Chalmers in 1998 and is now planted to Chalmers vineyards in Heathcote and Mildura. Nero d'Avola gets a lot of airtime for 'suitability' to Australian conditions in heat baked regions, but I reckon it's in the making that it's most suited " when it comes out light to medium bodied, crunchy textured, vibrant fruit, refreshing acidity. This kind of style goes well with much of the diversity of all Spanish, French and Italian cuisines and is great to drink in the warm seasons. Anyway, this wine is destemmed and fermented in open fermenters with ambient yeast, pressed and sent to old barrels, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. The fruit for this wine is wholly Heathcote... juicy and refreshing. Seriously. Sits in the palate with a washy, loose concentration but squares up and pinches with orange-citrus acidity and a thread of feathery tannins. Smells delicious " dark berry fruit, undergrowth, dried currents. Shows some of the same flavours in the palate, a dark, broodiness sitting under the coolness and freshness. There's no elegance here, but there is huge drinkability. And for that, it's oh so worthy.
