- Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon
A modern great, but a proudly individual style apparently made with as much deference to the top cabernets of California as those from Bordeaux. Something of a paradox because it is a rich, powerful wine yet is still able to reveal delicacy and complexity with age. A benchmark Margaret River style.Jeremy OliverCape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon – a single vineyard wine – enjoyed impressive beginnings, with the highly prized Melbourne Wine Show Jimmy Watson Trophies for both the 1982 and 1983 vintages. The Walcliffe Vineyard, planted by founder David Hohnen between 1970 and 1973, is located in the cooler southern sub-region of Margaret River. The vines – essentially dry grown – are anchored in gravel laterite soils derived from decomposed ironstone over gravel/clay subsoils. After fermentation it is matured for around 21 months in a combination of new (30%) and of French oak barrels from Nevers, Alliers and Troncais. This marvelously concentrated but muscular Margaret River Cabernet is a benchmark style with cedar/mocha/blackcurrant fruit characters and chocolaty/sinewy tannin structure. A top notch Margaret River Cabernet. Andrew Caillard MW

"Outstanding" (Cabernet Sauvignon) - Langton's Fine Wine Classification IV
"As one of Margaret River’s ‘founding five’ wineries, Cape Mentelle pioneered many of the region’s renowned wine styles and today is a benchmark for the quality of the region’s wines... Cape Mentelle Vineyards, established by David and Mark Hohnen and now part of the Moet Hennessy Wine Estates, is a specialist producer of premium wines in Margaret River in the south west corner of Western Australia. One of the country's finest wine regions, Margaret River enjoys a maritime location, with the added advantage of a long dry growing season.Cape Mentelle was one of the first vineyards established in the Margaret River region. First planted in 1970, there are today over 90 hectares under vine and the winery, constructed in 1977, crushes about 1,000 tonnes of fruit from estate vineyards and contract grown fruit sourced from within the region. Primary plantings are of cabernet sauvignon, semillon and sauvignon blanc with smaller amounts of shiraz, zinfandel, merlot and chardonnay." - Cape Mentelle
"...Cape Mentelle is one of those knocking on the door of the Winery of the Year Award." - James Halliday
