"Eye-popping complexity, understated generosity, immense longevity, and all at refreshing 13.5% alcohol. A honed structure crafted to exacting precision promises to hold it in great stead for a very long time."

"From the press release for this wine: "We have been sorting all of our red fruit berry by berry since the 2008 vintage but from 2010 we upgraded our berry sorting line to become the first and to date only winery in Australia utilising the Vistalys optical berry sorting technology. This allows even greater accuracy ensuring we maximise the potential of every red wine we make." This 2010 release comes from vineyard blocks planted in 1970/71 and 1989. The wine spends 30 days on skins, is basket pressed, and is matured in all French (Bordeaux) oak, 40 percent of which is new. Cape Mentelle cabernet was once released as a four year old but it's now released 30 months from vintage. I once thought of Cape Mentelle as, signature-wise, an overtly muscular wine but it's much softer nowadays. It makes sense that it can be released earlier.

In-grained, unforced complexity. Dried tobacco, gravel, mulberry and perfumed dried herbs. A burst of pure blackcurrant, as you'd expect, and want. Excellent flow but with an appropriate tether of tannin. Eucalypt. Has everything under control and a lot to offer. It's soft and seductive now but for its best it really needs a good sleep in the cellar. Fine release."
