[SOLD-OUT] Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 1998

Jeremy Oliver 93 points!
"This wine was voted the BEST CABERNET IN AUSTRALIA in the June 2002 issue of Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine. Peter Forrestal, who was on the panel, writes: "This seriously impressive red is arguably the best wine yet made at Cape Mentelle, the star of the vintage for the region, and the best currently available Australian cabernet sauvignon. The evolution of the cabernet style at Cape Mentelle has been driven by senior winemaker, John Durham, who has been with the winery in excess of 15 years. It has been possible because the estate vineyard from which this wine comes was planted more than 30 years ago and has been under the long-term care of viticulturist, Brenton Air. The 1998 Cabernet has dense, brambly, cassis and chocolate flavours: and is an opulent, complex and power-packed wine that needs five to 10 years to show its best."

"Long-term cedary, slighly rustic expression of briary cabernet whose herby cassis, mulberry and plum fruit are offset by smoky, cedar and vanilla oak qualities. It's long and firm, with seamless oak integration, fine-grained tannins and a slightly greenish aspect, but should evolve with cigarboxy complexity. Drink 2010-2018." Jeremy Oliver
"A huge, purply, perfumed monster that's chock full of primary fruit with a spicy edge to it. Lusciously sweet in the mouth, loaded with black fruit, spice and schmick oak that ride an ocean of fine, ripe chewy tannins. Huge length. Immaculate balance and showing great promise. Up there with the '91, '94 and '95." Andrew Wood, Divine Magazine
