"A very impressive and charming pinot which goes against the trend for 2011. It will benefit from a little time to allow the spicy, stemmy character to resolve further but is just starting to drink well now. Savoury leathery/oak notes; very complex. Exciting stuff. Cellar 2-13 years"
Gourmet Traveller, OCT/NOV 2013

A rare visit to the Farr family estate in Geelong still resonates for a couple of reasons. The immensely hungry soil sticks foremost in my mind with an almost moonscape outlook dotted with thatches of trees, and an undulating outlook across what could only be described as a small valley, of sorts. This moody place is from where the By Farr wines are born, fruit taken back to the austere winery (save a magnificent picture of a pantless Gary Farr doing pigeage, which is attached to the bathroom wall) and made by the hands of son Nick and father Gary. Farrside has often been the trump card for me " structure and austerity a calling card, in a way. Here to the 2011 vintage, and not much has changed.

An austere release no doubt, but I couldn't help thinking while tasting it across a couple of days that the wine is very complete " a picture of site and year speaking with great clarity, right down to sappy but integrated presence of stemmy, stalky, twiggy complexity. Though the wine has a sapid feel to drink, particularly after opening, it's still very stern, fine-boned and expressive of the whole bunch than it is about sexiness of fruit. That being said, the silky flow of the wine, its control and impressive length are hallmarks of greatness. It's quiet and elegant, impressive in its way. Superb minimalism and one of those must-have unique expressions for those who dig emphatic pinot noir.
Mike Bennie, Wine Front, 30th June 2013.

"Soft perfumed nose beginning to build, a little more delicate perfume than the Sangreal. The palate has sweetness and meaty flavours followed by minerality overtones enhanced by toasty oak. Firm yet delicate flavours with a long and savoury textured finish. A gem with ageing potential of 5 " 8 years. Such a persistent wine."

"Explosively stalky nose - I can understand this being divisive, but I love it. Loads of complex, vegetal aromas and bundles of raspberry fruit too. Long, aromatic finish. I love how bold and stylised this is."
