““It’s a wine that’s hard to judge, it’s a wine that typically needs four to five years to show itself at best in youth, it won’t drink so well in the first five years, but will age superbly”, says vigneron Michael Dhillon, “It’s a wine that I grapple with, it’s not so charming in youth, it’s unyielding in youth. I like with maturity that it’s earthy, mineral, spicy. With maturity they’re vigorous but open”. The site is very interesting, “it’s 1.3 acres, the top is very meagre soil, with the top half of the block very un-fertile, with vines having smaller canopy and smaller berries, with higher skin to juice ratio in the ferment. The lower half has much stronger vines, the berries give generosity. I think these two components give density, but also restraint, showing the two aspects”. Master at work, site at play.
Stern, serious, remarkable pinot noir. Few pinots find this architecture, seduction, almost menace. It’s guttural and yet transparent. It speaks of hungry soils through filaments of firm, dusty tannins. There’s dry and sweet fruit, but that’s only part of the tapestry woven here. Firm, intense, long in flavour. It unfurls with savouriness, spice, sinewy web of tannin, extreme length, complete mesmerising charm. In suspense for what happens with cellar time. Exceptional pinot noir.”

“Waiting to build, this vibrant and youthful pinot is a statement in underlying depth and latest power. Its deep perfume of rose petals, maraschino and red cherries and sweet, tight-grained oak is lifted by musky scents of five spice and dried herbs. Pristine and juicy, its long and vivacious palate of translucently bright flavour and meaty, funky complexity extends over a dusty spine of loose-knit tannins towards a lingering and tightly focused finish of lively acidity.”
