Wine Front 93+ Points!
Campbell Mattinson 93+ points!"The words "Bin 0″ have appeared on the Best's Shiraz label for over 100 years. A Thomson Family shiraz was not produced from 2009 so the best shiraz from the estate went into this wine.
When I first opened this there was a little more toasty oak showing than I'd prefer, but it didn't take too long for it to sink right down into the wine. We have a very good release here. It's all sweet-sour plums, assorted spices, menthol and roasted nuts. It's juicy, finely tannic, and impeccably well balanced. Weight of flavour is not an issue, yet it feels lively and light on its feet. It's like a Great Western version of a good-vintage St Henri. I recall Viv Thomson once saying that Best's shiraz is built on acid; this version is a good example of that. The cellar beckons."
Wine Front, November 2011
"Best's Great Western is one of Australia's vinous jewels - established by Henry Best in 1866. The Thomson family have owned it since 1920 with fifth-generation Ben Thomson the current CEO with his winemaking dad, Viv, trying to stay in the background. Bin 0 Shiraz is an Australian classic - medium bodied yet intensely flavoured with dark plum and black cherry flavours, a good dollop of oak and underlying ironstone minerality. It's enjoyable now but would happily respond to a decade or two in the cellar."
