'It's dry and spicy but mostly it's immensely persistent. The flavours here push on into the next day. Roasted nuts, undergrowth, sap, sweet cherries, fruits of the forest. Savoury is its middle name, and its surname too. Once again it's a polarising wine, riddled with stalk, woodsmoke and mineral, but it's ripe and sophisticated and the length of flavour is something else.'
The Wine Front, Dec 2014
The Stuart comes from small batches of the best fruit from Bannockburn's oldest Pinot vines. These 'sticks' were planted in 1976 and are situated beside the S.R.H. block, in the aptly named Olive Tree Hill vineyard (ten or so majestic olive trees dominate the skyline here). It will be fascinating to see how these newer styles age compared to what Michael calls the 'hardcore extremism of the earlier beasties'. In the meantime, this is a belter of a wine: stylish and crunchy with dark pastille-like fruit, also some plum, red rose and lots of spice notes. Then there's excellent freshness and age-worthy, tea-leafy tannins. That little spoonful of ripeness clearly brings dividends in mouthfeel, balance and the length of the wine. An amazingly complete Stuart.
