Campbell Mattinson 94 Points!
Campbell Mattinson 94 Points!"Last year's release came with these details: Fermented on skins. Matured in acacia puncheons. 92% sauvignon blanc, but 4% riesling and, this year, 4% chardonnay too. "You know," Michael Glover says, "I look forward to the day that the straight-jacket varietal nomenclature is removed from the label and total freedom is allowed to reign supreme". This 2013 doesn't have chardonnay but does still have riesling, at 6%. It sees some new French oak and Italian acacia puncheons, is all wild yeast, and spends 10 months on lees. All switches flicked.
It's textural, funky, flinty and not at all hard up for fruit. You can have your cake and get to eat it too. Smoke, sulphur, grass, stonefruits, nuts and various florals. It's got it going on. It's arresting at first, a little stinky, but as it rests in the glasses it offers more and more. At no stage though is it tame or boring. "
