[SOLD-OUT] Bannockburn 1314 AD Chardonnay 2021

BACK AFTER 3 YEARS! BLOWING AWAY MANY CHARDONNAYS AT THIS PRICE. HAS BANNOCKBURN RICHNESS AND FINESSE!

"Named for the year of the Battle of Bannockburn. We make this wine with bistro lunch in our minds; stylistically fresh, vibrant and made for immediate drinking enjoyment.

Predominantly from our Stuart block, planted in 1997 to Bernard clones 95 and 96 and from Kelly Lane block planted in 2016 to clone 76. Whole bunch pressed to tank, settled overnight and racked to a combination of oak puncheons and stainless steel tank. Fermented with indigenous yeast. The tank portion was fermented slowly to maintain freshness and aromatics, and prevented from completing malolactic fermentation.

Classic Bannockburn aromatics, slightly less defined by power than the precision of the Bernard clones in this case. A full palate lengthened by balanced acids and a hint of oak spice. Freshens in the glass, and versatile with regard to food pairings." - Bannockburn

"After a three-year hiatus, 2021 marks a welcome return of the 1314 A.D. Chardonnay to the fold. The fruit was sourced from across Bannockburn’s estate (including from some 1976-planted vines), then whole-bunch pressed and settled overnight. There’s a bump in malo for this release (70%) from previous years, something Matt was very happy to let vintage and conditions dictate. The 2021 saw 20% new oak, which is faultlessly integrated.

For a wine that isn’t made each year, Holmes seems very much at home with its expression. It opens with enveloping aromatic fireworks—yellow stone fruits, struck match, white flowers and grapefruit. The palate is compact and balanced, loaded with dense citrus notes, deftly integrated oak and a refreshing grapefruit twist that rounds out the finish. A very well-priced thoroughbred." - Bibendum
