Avani Issan Chardonnay 2021

WINE FRONT 96 POINTS!
FROM THE CLOSE-PLANTED SITE MADE FAMOUS BY BASS PHILLIP

"Nutty, saline, succulent, appley. There’s four words I like in chardonnay in a row. So very savoury, almost elements of gentle Jura here, or at least a distinct lean into the nuttiness and non-fruit characters of the place. Briny finish is beautiful, upfront more fruit character but geez, doesn’t salted nuts get in the mix and a swish of nougat lends some personality. It feels potent but cool, lively and textural – a treat all up, and a fantastic and distinct expression." - Wine Front

"This is the site previously used by Phillip Jones of Bass Phillip, who liked the spectrum of umami flavours he found in fruit from here. Issan Vineyard is a high density planting of 9,000 vines per hectare of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The philosophy in the vineyard is based on natural farming principles and the viticulture focuses on the soil health of the site.

Avani is the product of Shashi and her husband Devendra Singh that have been in the Mornington Peninsula for 30 years. In 2000 Shashi and Devendra collaborated with Phillip Jones of Bass Phillip Wines to make wines under the Wildcroft banner, followed by her wine-making apprenticeship working part time at the Bass Phillip winery. In 2009 vintage was Shashi’s breakout year. It was the first vintage Shashi completed by herself under Phillip’s watchful eye at the Leongatha winery and in 2012 Shashi finally established her own winey at Red Hill South." - Wine House
