G.D. Vajra

"It's hard to believe, but the Vajra family keeps raising the bar. The 2014 Barolos are strong across the board, especially within the context of the vintage, but the flagship Bricco delle Viole is a truly special, moving wine." - Antonio Galloni, Feb 2018

"Milena and Aldo began the winery in 1972, producing small quantities of Piemontese wines from vineyards planted by Aldo’s father in 1947. The fruit was sold to negociants until Aldo bottled his first vintage in 1978. Today, the family has 40 Ha under vine. The estate is steeped in tradition, Barolos are macerated for 20 to 30 days depending on the vintage. Wines are typically matured in large neutral Slavonian casks. Stylistically, the estate produces wines of incredible finesse and elegance. The holdings in Bricco delle Viole is the prized vineyard of the estate, planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. It’s a very fresh terroir with open exposure and breezy conditions. Holdings in Barolo commune are: Fossati, Coste de Vergne and La Volta. Recently acquired vineyards in the commune of Sino (just outside Barolo DOCG, next to Serralunga) make a gorgeous Langhe Nebbiolo." - Giuliana Imports

Jancis Robinson 18/20 Points!"Barolo. Bright pale blackish crimson. Pure, unusually floral (for 2011) aromas and then round, fruity, confident palate before some finely crafted tannins. Very pretty rather than massive. Great balance and...

Wine Spectator 93 points!“A mix of eucalyptus, cherry, leafy and tar aromas and flavors are allied to a moderately firm structure in this balanced red. The finish is long and walks the line between fresh cherry, spice and earth notes. Best from 2018...

Light seasoning of oak spice here? Or maybe it's just the fruit profile. Anyway, cinnamon dusted toast, rich feel with supple tannin, but feels a little unevolved at present " 'reticent' is perhaps the right word. Admittedly, I only spent a short time in...

A new wine for Vajra, I believe. Ravera, from the three I have tasted so far, really seems to be over-delivering in this great vintage. Small pour, tasted pretty quickly. Quality VERY clear. Importer: Enoteca Sileno Darker fruit, deep cherry, new...
