[SOLD-OUT] Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Di Montalcino 2016

96 POINTS GREG SHERWOOD MW!

"The Pieve Santa Restituta estate was acquired by the Gaja family in 1994. The “white,” rocky soils of this area, in the southwest subzone of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, were abandoned long ago by the sharecropper mezzadri farmers. But while other crops struggled in the rugged, nutrient-poor terrain, it has proven ideal for the cultivation of grapes destined to become fine wine.

The historic estate, named for the parish church (pieve in Italian) of Saint Restituta, covers 16 hectares and produces a classic blended Brunello di Montalcino.

2016 blessed us with complex and captivating wines. Characterised by deep ruby colours, the wines are pure with vivid aromas, they are structured but also fine and gracious with lively freshness and gentle tannins.

the nose is refreshing and youthful with intriguing aromas of raspberry and strawberry, very complex and intense, with a well defined hint of white pepper. The palate is voluptuous and sweet pure fruited. The tannins are easily detectable but velvety and beautifully integrated. It is a harmonious and gentile wine, immediately impressive yet with structure and framework to insure a long life in the cellar." - Gaja

"Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta is one of Angelo Gaja’s two Tuscan properties, on the site of an old church, Santa Restituta, which dates back to the 4th century. As is the family’s style, their’s is a fusion of modern and traditional winemaking. This from one of the finest names in Italian wine are impeccably crafted and full of character, finesse and age ability.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino normale is a fabulously plush, concentrated and intense expression of Brunello and represents probably the estate’s best vintage to date. The aromatics are perfumed and detailed showing cherry blossom, violets, vanilla oak spice and ripe dark layers of red and black berries, sweet cherry tobacco, cola and subtle red liquorice notes with just the faintest spearmint menthol top note. On the palate, the tannins are ripe but powerful with broad mouth-coating grip supported by pure cherry and cranberry fruit concentration, hints of balsamic, crystalline fresh acids and a wonderfully long harmonious finish. Distinguished and refined, but showing tremendous breadth, depth and structural power making this a perfect wine for medium to long-term cellaring." - Greg Sherwood MW
